Happy Lappy

Idle thought — the tags field in Logjam should be below the text entry field. How do I know what I want to tag my entry with before I even start typing?

So I got meself the HP Pavilion DV5200TX. It’s not bad, as laptops go. I’ve got only one complaint — the damn blue LEDs are blinding in the dark. Particularly the bright wireless indicator LED. What were the morons thinking?

It’s running Gentoo primarily — fonts suck right now because the RENDER extension is turned off (X.org 7.1 introduces an ABI change that nVidia needs to address. Did I mention this baby has an nVidia GeForce Go 7400 with 256 megs of RAM? Downside — it’s a power hog). Need to put more detailed information up on Gentoo Wiki or some such so people do not grope in the dark like I did to get all the hardware up.

My only gotcha for now, barring the LEDs is that it might be overkill. Will let you know about battery life whe I have sufficient data. :)

Battery life might be low — need to do some more data gathering before concluding.

Downsides… Its a powerhog.. Wait till ya find out why DELL is prefered over the hapless HP..

Dell uses 3rd rate hardware. HP merely uses 2nd rate hardware. I’d rather have a system functional through most of it’s life whiel lasting 2 hours on battery than a cheaper system that I need to use the NBD warranty of every 6 months.

Guess he is doing it! 10 GB for ‘Blows should allow him to instally atleast one or maybe two games to fully use that card ;)

Overkill in what sense? I definitely don’t need the video card or the remote control and jazz. But a 15.4″ would be nicer than a 14.1″.

Hey saw your comments while doing a google search on this model…not many on this model till now..I got this lappy as well a couple of days back and all’s well except the battery as you rightly pointed…perhaps a big price for the add-ons. Another issue is the fonts which suck as of now and get worse while scrolling pages on the net…any idea how I can fine tune them to get better quality. The HP reseller has no idea and Nvidia has limited info on this card. Any info wud be appreciated.

What version of X.org are you using? No hope of the thing working with 7.1 till nVidia decides to put out a new build. Mine works fine with 7.0.

nVidia has released drivers that fix this issue.

Where did you get these drivers? Cant seem to find them on the Nvidia site? In fact they dont list this card? Please let me know. Thanks.
