Fragments in the Analysis of College Rejection Letters

One may unambiguously state that the UWisconsin, Madison and Rutgers, New Brunswick write the nicest letters of rejections.

Okay, so maybe it’s time for some updates

  • Li’l while back, I (after promising not to) went to Blossom and (after, again, promising not to), bought books. Three of ‘em. Larry Niven’s The Ringworld Engineers, Michael Moore’s Dude, Where’s My Country, and Gary Zakov’s The Dancing Wu Li Masters. In a shocking turn of circumstances, I’ve finished reading all of them too. *gasp* (they’re all quite decent (barring the slight let-down of the Ringworld sequel) — *pats self on the back for displaying such remarkable taste)
  • Am now reading Robert Pirsig’s Lila. The metaphysical parts of the book (which started out being quite reasonable in ZAMM) have become spotty and hollow in this, but the character of Lila is (as intended?) quite intriguing
  • I’m self-interfering with parentheses again. :-)
  • I didn’t make it to the IISc MS programme. I’m starting to get good at botching up interviews
  • Python is a rather uncomfortable language to look at (particularly w.r.t. scoping rules, absolute disregard for encapsulation and so forth)
  • In random order, watched Bang, Bang You’re Dead, Man On The Moon, Annie Hall, Cruel Intentions (uggggh!), Samsara, and Gori Vatra — good stuff (barring the absolute dross that was Cruel Intentions).

And I’ve quit Synopsys, what with my plan to pursue “higher” “studies” in this government college in UP. ‘Twas most agonizing, particularly leaving good friends behind.

Am now in the market for a laptop, subject to successful scrounging of funds. Looking at the HP Pavilion dv5118tx/dv52xxtx, if I can get a good deal. The only competitor, the Dell Inspiron 6400 (a.k.a. E1505) lost out due to pathetic reliability of Dell laptops (Earth to Michael Dell — are you listening?).

Much cleaning, packing to do. Can’t believe I’m leaving Bangalore. Youch.

Only if it were this easy to get into a Govt College in UP!

Now that you’ve quit, why aren’t you just sleeping, eating and sipping tea?

Your schedule seems busier than mine.

Congrats buddy.. When do you leave?

lol @ government college (IIT)<—- Only you can refer to it like that!

Btw, I’ve heard HP laptops get hot too soon too much.. Why not think of a toshiba? They be light and they be good performance for good battery life..

/me is off on the 22nd of July.

HP seems to be the best cost vs. quality tradeoff. Toshiba is expensive, and I’ve heard that all but the top line-up has iffy hardware.

I’ve been using a HP for over 8months now, trust me the quality is abysmal.

nc6320 1. Design is bad 2. Gets heated soon (the earlier compaq model I had was good this way) 3. Build quality is sucky 4. Network card fails frequently

The earlier compaqs were good. If I were you I would buy the macbook.

First 3 things seem to be common to all brands. Point 4, I might have to take a risk on.

MacBook is way too expensive. Ultra-low value for money (remember, you’re talking to student here). And it’s only a 12″ screen. Also, overheating complaints abound with the MacBook Pro as well.

I’ve seen the 12″ macbook as you might think its not too small, its quite comparable with the normal laptop screens which are almost 13″, surely not a big difference. Now that you can run windows/linux on the macbook its no problem at all.

And first 3 things are not really common. lenovo I guess is a better bet there. Dell also is a little better in terms of build quality.

After I bought my ipod I’ve realized apple is god like.

Macbook — overpriced. And I read a review about overheating. I saw the thing too. It’s small (compared to a nice 15.4″ display). Also expensive (student, student!). Besides, you could always run Linux on the Mac. :)

Lenovo — too expensive again, and to boot, it’s 12k for a 2 year warranty extension. As opposed to ~7k for others.

Dell Inspiron body sucks. And the hardware is guaranteed to fail often. My one-time Latitude D610 power button/circuitry conked and they had to replace the motherboard. And I’m not the only one. Not worth the pain.

I’m thinking of getting an HP Pavilion too. Where are you planning to buy yours from? Although I have heard good things about the Dell Inspiron and am open to that as well.

I went to a bunch of places and came down to 3 places (in order of preference):

    1) Computer Shop/Planet (owned by the same family) on Brigade Road — I sort of know the guy 2) Geeta Electronics in Sheshadripuram — they seem to be willing to give a reasonable deal 3) This place in Jayanagar 4th Block — Also willing to give a reasonable discount

Dell hardware is fault-prone. Our company ran primarily Dell and we had one of their engineers on site on a fulltime basis. Too many problems.

Either way, I intend to get a warranty extension up front. These guys all use flaky hardware (I think half their business is through selling warranties or charging exorbitant prices for parts after the warranty expires)
